| The
prefecture of Kastoria is located in the northwestern side
of the Western Macedonia region of Greece. It is one of
the most mountainous prefectures where there exist noteworthy
prehistoric and Byzantine monuments.
This area is known for its natural beauty. The high mountains,
the Pindos mountain range, offer an array of winter sports
while there are also aquatic areas that attract visitors'
interest including Lake Orestiada as well as many rivers
and streams.
Furthermore, there are some picturesque villages and a splendid
town, Kastoria.
Kastoria, the capital of the prefecture of the same name,
is one of Macedonia’s most picturesque cities. Built
on the shores of a lovely lake, it delights the visitor
with its old neighborhoods, its narrow lanes, stately mansions
and Byzantine churches.

Kastoria
and the surrounding area are internationally known as centers
of the manufacturing and trading of furs. Fur manufacturing
dates back more than a thousand years and the economic
activity of the prefecture centers around furs. Every year
an international fur exhibition takes place
in Kastoria.
Kastoria has more than 70 Byzantine and post-Byzantine churches,
dating from as far back as
the 9th century up to the 19th, almost making it a living
rural museum.
Don’t miss a visit to the Folk Art Museum, housed
in one of the mansions.
Lake Orestiada is especially beautiful in autumn and spring,
the best seasons to get to know the town. At various points
round the lake you’ll find restaurants, tavernas,
rotisseries, and cafes for gazing at the lake and reflecting
on what you’ve seen.
Argos Orestiko (10km. from Kastoria) is fast developing
into a boom town, thanks to the opening of weaving and fur-processing
factories there.
There are many pretty villages in the district, perched
on hillsides, surrounded by firs and willows,
as well as lakeside settlements with tavernas specializing
in fish from the lake.
